How Efficient Are Hair Removal Products Such As Laser Devices?

By Chris Jay

Amongst the first types of lasers that were approved by the FDA for hair reduction purposes we can mention the diode, ruby, alexandrite and intense pulsed light systems. In order to figure out how to remove hair in the best possible way, lots of tests have been performed and the results showed that these lasers and light sources have excellent results particularly on women who have light skin and dark hair.

However, special devices with longer wavelengths provide optimum results for women with darker skin, who will not get the same benefits using regular lasers and light sources, because the light provided by them will be significantly absorbed by the dark pigments on the skin, instead of being absorbed in the hair follicle.

Lasers and IPL devices (that use Intense Pulsed Light) work by sending beams of light throughout the skin, in order to be absorbed by the dark pigment from the hair follicle shafts, which is known as melanin. Since hair grows in cycles, in order for the beams of light to be able to destroy all the hair follicles and remove unwanted hair completely, several treatment sessions are necessary. Exposing the skin to repeated laser treatments is not likely to have unwanted side effects, because most lasers also have special cooling devices, which minimize the discomfort that can be caused by the light, at the same type protecting the top layer of skin against excessive heating or changes in pigmentation.

This procedure is particularly useful to women suffering from excessive hair growth. This condition, highly embarrassing for a woman, is classified as hypertrichosis or hirsuitism. The first term describes excessive growth of body hair, which can have normal or abnormal pattern and can be a result of medication, malnutrition, metabolic problems, tumors, hormones or can have a genetic cause. Hirsuitism describes a type of excessive hair growth that makes women have manly mustache, beard or hairy lower abdomen. It can also be caused by tumors, medication, hormonal problems or heredity. Waxing, sugaring and shaving offer very poor results in these cases.

The procedure is quite simple, but it has to be supervised by dermatologists, who have the necessary knowledge and can offer proper care to every woman and for every type of skin. They know how to use the lasers and light sources efficiently so that the discomfort is minimal for the woman, compared to any other hair reduction method. Their knowledge also allows them to treat larger areas covered by unwanted hair, so that the procedure becomes very simple and highly effective. There are various types of lasers that can be used. Most beauty centers will have at least two types of FDA-approved lasers. Many types of lasers are necessary because different types of skin need different treatments, and, so far, no one laser has proven to be ideal for every skin color.
